Town Markets Development Meeting

Redevelopment of the Markets

On Monday 6th September the developers, McAulay, together with representatives of the States Of Guernsey met with the three heritage groups: The National Trust of Guernsey, Guernsey Heritage Trust and Societe Guernesaise.

The President of the National Trust, Roland Ogier, attended and made the following comments

"We were given an assurance by the developers that there is a definite plan of development in place and this should accelerate in the next few months. We were also given a firm commitment that all works will be completed by Easter 2006. The developers admitted that structural and administrative problems had slowed work. They now wanted to press ahead with the development as it looked a mess; the length of time meant that it was taking on the appearance of an abandoned building. He added that it might initially appear that artefacts get destroyed but reconstruction will take place fairly quickly and much in the original form. I am happy that we are making progress towards re-instating a large proportion of the external shape and features, except the bonded store, which will be changed extensively. All the items which are moved will be handled carefully. They will then be kept and catalogued or reused where possible."

Details of progress can be found on the developers' web site » http://www.themarketplace.gg and a public noticeboard will be erected at the St. Peter Port Constables' Office and later in the Markets Area.

Finally, Mr. Ogier added that the people of Guernsey would appreciate more openess and "I am happy they have agreed to keep us informed, have got a plan of action and are ready to put it into gear."
