Set in the old farm buildings situated at Saumarez Park, the Folk Museum is fortunate to nestle among a backdrop of ornamental gardens and horticultural beauty. The Museum opened in 1968, was a joint venture undertaken by La Société Guernsesiaise and the fledgling National Trust of Guernsey. As time went on, the Trust took over its management and running (under a full-time curator) and continued to improve and expand the endeavour, culminating in an excellent visitor attraction, that one can today see as well as hear since two computerised multi-lingual audio systems provide English, French and German commentary in two of the rooms. In addition to the computerised multi-lingual systems written text is provided throughout the Museum in both German and French to benefit visitors from the continent." The early displays were based on Advocate W. H. Langlois' collection of farm implements and carts, but as time went on improved funding and generous donations have increased the collections size enormously. The Museum now boasts a rich array of Victoriana, furniture, china, household items and photographs as well as a representative range of dolls and soft toys, including Cobo Alice, pedlar and charity bazaar dolls, a proportion of which are set out in a series of furnished rooms that take the visitor back to a farm cottage and stableyard of the late 1800s.
