Le Viaer Marchi (The Old Market)

The Old Market was started in 1970 to raise money for the then new Folk Museum. It became so popular, that the National Trust of Guernsey made it their main money raiser.

Stalls selling bric a brac, books, prints, childrens' toys, jewellery, bread, cakes, sweets, milk bar & butter making. There are also entertainments by schools, L'Assembleaie, dancers, bands, etc., etc. Guernsey French is spoken and many people wear appropriate costume.

It has become a unique evening, popular with visitors and locals alike.

This is the Trust's largest and most popular social event . It is always held in Saumarez Park on the first Monday in July and runs from about 6pm to when the last stragglers leave. This event now provides the Trust with its greatest source of income. Net takings in 1970 were £400 and in 2000 - £20,000. Helpers are always needed to assist with this event.
