Whilst the National Trust of Guernsey marked it's Silver Jubilee on the 7th of December 1985, the seeds had been sown a little over twenty-six years previously. Records show that a meeting was held on the 2nd of November 1959, "to explore the possibility of forming a Trust to hold any real estate in perpetuity for the people of the island". This meeting had been prompted by an article in the local paper - The Guernsey Evening Press extolling the virtues of the valley at Les Talbots and questioning whether, wholly or in part it could "be recognised as a miniature National Park, so that it's character could be preserved for all time". Letters of support from Mrs Margaret F Carey and Miss M G Bonamy-Collings were published in the same month. On the 18th of February 1960 a formal proposition to form a Trust was carried by the eight persons present. During the months that followed, a constitution was on the 16th of November with the launch of the National Trust of Guernsey and it's founding day as the 7th of December 1960. |

Now, over forty years later, we care for areas of natural
beauty, fields of rare orchids, buildings of historic
interest both within St Peter Port and also in the rural
areas which are of outstanding interest and importance. In
addition to this we also manage the small island of Houmet
Paradis on the East coast of the island, the Folk Museum and
shop and a fine collection of costumes. It is wholly independent and relies for it's finances
entirely on gifts, legacies, members' subscriptions and
annual fund raising. Please click below for further details about our work and how you can become involved. |
