Discover Old Guernsey at Saumarez Park Folk & Costume Museum and Gift Shop

The Museum's collection of costumes and artefacts is unique in that it consists of material from within the Bailiwick of Guernsey only;  that is, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm.  It includes mens, womens and childrens' clothes for all occasions and every accessory imaginable - hats, bags, gloves, shoes, scarves, muffs, tippets, galoshes, spats and some items whose use we can but guess!

There is also a large group of household textiles which includes not only beautifully embroidered tablecloths and early nineteenth century patchwork quilts, a layette made by the  English W.V.S for Guernsey evacuees in 1940, a log-cabin quilt from the Canadian Red Cross and a wireless cushion made for King George V.

Eighteenth century garments include an embroidered silk brocade Court coat worn by a Lord Mayor and the nineteenth century clothes include silk and satin dresses worn for Sunday best and the hard-wearing working clothes made from wollen moeton and French cotton twill.  The twentieth century collection reflects the stringency of two World Wars and the financial book of the 1950's and 60's.  There is also a significant collection of civilian and Armed Forces uniforms, including an example from the Royal Guernsey Militia Third (North) Regiment.

The Current exhibition, "And the Bride wore ...", shows wedding dresses from 1750-1990 and "The Party Afterwards" which includes a dress worn by the film star Olivia de Havilland.
